วันอาสาฬหบูชา เป็นวันที่พระพุทธองค์ทรงแสดงธรรมเป็นครั้งแรกแก่กลุ่มปัญจวัคคีย์ ณ ป่าอิสิปตนมฤคทายวัน ชื่อว่า “ธัมมจักกัปปวัตตนสูตร” เกิดพระสงฆ์รูปแรกขึ้นในโลก คือ พระอัญญาโกณฑัญญะ ในวันขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือน ๘ (๔๕ ปี ก่อนพุทธศักราช) ซึ่งถือว่าพระพุทธองค์ได้เริ่มประกาศศาสนาเพื่อประโยชน์ เพื่อความสุข เพื่ออนุเคราะห์แก่ชาวโลก ด้วยพระมหากรุณาธิคุณยิ่ง

เมื่อถึงฤดูฝน พระสงฆ์ยังไม่หยุดการจาริกเผยแผ่ธรรม ได้เหยียบย่ำข้าวกล้าของชาวบ้านเสียหาย พระพุทธองค์จึงประกาศให้พระสงฆ์หยุดการจาริก ให้จำพรรษาในที่ใดที่หนึ่งเป็นเวลา ๓ เดือน โดยถือเอาวันแรม ๑ ค่ำ เดือน ๘ เป็นวันเริ่มต้น

ในแต่ละปี เมื่อวันสำคัญเช่นนี้เวียนมาถึง ชาวไทยทั้งหลายนิยมเข้าวัดทำบุญเป็นกรณีพิเศษเพื่อทำบุญตักบาตร ถวายเทียนพรรษา ผ้าอาบน้ำฝน สมาทานรักษาศีล เจริญจิตภาวนา ฟังธรรม และเวียนเทียน ดังนั้น วัดไทยกรุงวอชิงตัน, ดี.ซี. จึงมีก􀄞ำหนดการจัดงานทำบุญ “วันอาสาฬหบูชา-วันเข้าพรรษา” ดังนี้

กำหนดการ

• เวลา ๐๙.๐๐ น. – พิธีแห่เทียนพรรษา ผ้าอาบน้ำฝน
• เวลา ๑๐.๐๐ น. – บูชาพระรัตนตรัย สมาทานศีล พระสงฆ์เจริญพระพุทธมนต์
• เวลา ๑๐.๓๐ น. – พุทธศาสนิกชนร่วมตักบาตร
• เวลา ๑๑.๐๐ น. – ถวายภัตตาหารเพลแด่พระสงฆ์
• เวลา ๑๑.๓๐ น. – พุทธศาสนิกชนรับประทานอาหารร่วมกัน
• เวลา ๑๒.๔๕ น. – ฟังพระธรรมเทศนา ๑ กัณฑ์, พระสงฆ์อนุโมทนา, กล่าวคำำถวายดอกไม้ธูปเทียน เวียนเทียน เป็นเสร็จพิธี

Asalha Puja Day is the anniversary of the day on which the Buddha delivered his first sermon to his five disciples at the Deer Park in Benares, over two thousand five hundred years ago. The
day also marks the beginning of the worship of the Triple Gem: the Buddha, His Teachings and His Disciples.

The Buddhist Lent starts on the first day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month. The tradition of the Buddhist Lent or the annual three-month Rains Retreat, known in Thai as “KHAO PHAN SA”, dates back to the time of early Buddhism in ancient India. In this era, all holy men, mendicants and sages spent three months of the annual rainy season in permanent dwellings. They avoided unnecessary travel during this period when crops were still new, for fear they might accidentally step on young plants. In deference to popular opinion, Lord Buddha decreed that his followers should also abide by this ancient tradition, and they began to gather in groups to live in simple dwellings.
